Words Matter: Shaping Perspectives on Adoption

This year, my New Year’s resolution isn’t about the usual fitness goals or dieting; I am committed to something far more impactful: promoting accurate and positive language around adoption.

I refuse to roll my eyes any longer at phrases like "gotcha day" or hear someone casually ask why a person would "adopt out" their child. I am done with questions about whether I know our children’s “real parents” or why anyone would “give away” such wonderful kids. These phrases, among others, perpetuate outdated and damaging views of adoption, treating children as objects to be "caught" or "given away" rather than recognizing them as individuals with unique stories.

My mission is clear: to promote and educate others on the importance of positive adoption language.

This matters significantly because words shape reality. Using insensitive language reinforces negative stereotypes and contributes to the stigma surrounding adoption.

Shifting our language isn’t just about political correctness; it’s about genuine empathy and understanding. We need to recognize the profound impact adoption has on individuals and families and treat the entire process with the dignity it deserves. This change is vital for reducing stigma, protecting privacy, and fostering a sense of belonging and self-worth. For our children, who often bear the weight of societal misconceptions, this shift can be remarkably empowering, enhancing their self-esteem and validating their unique stories.

This is a powerful reminder that even small actions—like being intentional with our words—can lead to a significant positive impact. Together, we can cultivate a more compassionate and understanding society, one word at a time.

This year, I am fully committed to making a positive change by educating and advocating for more accurate language surrounding adoption. I believe in this mission wholeheartedly.

Because words truly do matter.
